Character Name: Belphegor
Character Series: Katekyo Hitman Reborn
Age: 16
Height: 170cm/5'7
Weight: 58kg/128lbs
Background: ‘Prince’ Belphegor was the second born of a pair of twins said to be descended from royal blood. While still very young Belphegor (hereafter referred to as ‘Bel’, because I am lazy) ‘haphazardly’ killed his elder brother, later claiming to mistake the unfortunate boy for a cockroach. After committing this (thus far unexplained) act of fratricide Bel, believed to be a genius of sorts, spent an undisclosed amount of time developing weaponry and skills that would amuse him. Focusing on knife and wire play Bel eventually joined the Varia, the Vongola Crime Family's elite and independent assassination squad, not knowing what else to do with his skills. Eight years before ‘Katekyo Hitman Reborn!’ opens the Varia, lead by Xanxus (the adopted son of the current leader) attempted a coup against the Vongola family. This bloody incident became known as ‘The Cradle Affair’ and ultimately failed when Xanxus was defeated and imprisoned by Vongola IX.
After eight years an unknown individual releases Xanxus, who once more moves against the Vongola family, wishing to take over rather than defer to Sawada Tsunayoshi (the soon to be Vongola X), who is the rightful heir to Vongola the IX’s legacy and mafia family. To this end Xanxus instigates a tournament between his forces (the Varia) and Tsuna’s, fighting for possession of seven symbolic rings. Bel’s opponent for possession of the ‘Ring of Storm’ ( The wind; one that fiercely blows away everything) in the tournament is Tsuna’s ‘right hand man,’ the bomb throwing Gokudera.
The night before the match was to take place Bel engages in his regular habit of wandering the neighbourhood looking for someone to kill. Eventually he came across and murdered two local killers, despite his teammate Marmon’s warning that it would be better not to get involved in the area’s local ‘politics.’
The next day Gokudera and Bel meet on a battlefield that is set to blow up after a certain amount of time. Though Bel initially has the upper hand (attaching a wire to Gokudera that Bel manipulates in order to give his knives the appearance of supernatural accuracy) Gokudera eventually sees through the trick and is able to incapacitate his rival. Unfortunately Gokudera did not count on Bel’s pride and determination not to lose (even when unconscious!) and the physically bested ‘Prince’ uses the last of his strength to grab Gokudera’s ring and tenaciously hold on, despite the fact the battlefield is about to be blown up, which would likely kill both participants. At Tsuna’s urging Gokudera forfeits the ring to Bel in order to escape the explosion. Bel survives the subsequent blast with only a broken leg and superficial injuries and is declared the winner.
After a series of forfeited matches, assassination attempts and rampaging robots Tsuna and Xanxus meet in one last formal battle. All members of the family (including the Varia) were fitted with a special watch that poisons and immobilizes them while the two heads of the warring factions duke it out for control of the group. During Xanxus’ and Tsuna’s fiery battle a ring (which counteracts the poison) is knocked to Bel, who uses it and moves to tip the scales to the Varia side. Along the way he runs into the Vongola holder of the ‘Ring of Cloud,’ Hibari. The two fight and just as Hibari is about to get the upper hand Bel claims victory and leaves, planning to cure the Varia member Marmon (or ‘Viper’) of the poison in order to initiate ‘plan B’ should Xanxus not be victorious over Tsuna. Hibari, badly injured by Bel’s knives, is left in a state of near collapse but still manages to aide his own teammate, Yamamoto.
By threatening a poisoned and vulnerable Vongola member (a girl named Chrome) Bel and Marmon are able to collect all the rings and use them to free Xanxus, who once more has been defeated and imprisoned in ice (this time by Tsuna). Unfortunately the rings reject Xanxus and he is denied leadership of the family. Xanxus is unable to continue to fight and Bel and Marmon, realizing that they are outnumbered and outmatched as reinforcements for the good guys arrive, surrender.
What becomes of Bel and the rest of the Varia after the second failed coup has yet to be revealed, but in the current arc (in which Tsuna travels ten years the future) a twenty six year old Bel is seen in the company of fellow Varia member Squalo, advising Tsuna and his family. It is fairly safe to infer that the Varia, or at least Bel and Squalo, are on better terms with the main family in ten years time.
Personality:
All the Varia members are said to be represented by one of the seven deadly sins and Belphegor is no exception, being named after a demon associated with the sin of ‘sloth.’ Rather than being ‘lazy’ (though there’s a touch of that as well) Bel is characterized by a certain amount of apathy and disinterest in things that normally concern others. He claims not to care about politics, is totally unmotivated by monetary gain (the character book lists him as the least concerned and most careless with money of all the characters), forms few (if any) close relationships and has the second messiest room of all the characters in the series. This may not seem particularly serious, but Christian moralists claimed that those who suffer from the sin of sloth, those who are unmotivated (and unmoved ) to act for good, often invite desire to sin for its own sake, ‘idle hands being the devil’s playthings’ and all. This may somewhat explain Bel’s bizarre character.
Bel is a casual murderer, there seems to be little that truly excites him other than ripping apart other human beings with his knives and wires, a practice that gave rise to his nickname, ‘Prince the Ripper.’ It is said that he achieved ‘ultimate happiness’ when he killed his brother and one of the reasons he joined the Varia is that he cannot forget the exhilaration of killing. When an opponent injures him and he bleeds (such as during his match with Gokudera) Bel is further reminded of the day he killed his twin and it awakens his ‘artless and barefaced cruelty.’
His royal lineage seems to be a significant source of pride for Belphegor, who often uses it as a catchall excuse for many of his actions (‘Because I’m a Prince!’ and ‘The Prince is bored, so he came to bug you!’), but it may also be his way of distancing himself from other people. His opinion of the other Varia (with the exception of Xanxus, who, even when defeated, bloodied and ranting, is thought of by Bel as ‘So cool!’) is quite low, thinking of them in derogatory ways and going as far as to not help another teammate because he didn’t want to listen to his whining. He also claims to be a genius (a claim that is supported by the other Varia who, despite his low opinion of them, seem to view Bel with a fair amount of respect) and is an independent thinker who typically relies on tricks during combat rather than trying to overpower his opponents. Unfortunately Bel often doesn’t seem to think highly of his foe’s intelligence and when (or rather ‘if’) they find a way to counter his wire trick/s he may find himself at a disadvantage.
This is not to say that Bel is an aloof and distant individual, on the contrary he is usually quite talkative and glib, often playful in action and speech. He has a distinctive chuckle (U~shishi!) And occasionally spouts random English words and phrases. When Haru (Tsuna’s would be wife and Bel’s intended victim for the night if she was unable to find him any strong assassins to kill) misunderstood what he was asking of her and brought him to a sushi restaurant he ended up engaged in a sort of sushi prep contest with the owner and went away happy (despite not killing anyone). The restaurant made high profits that night due to the spectacle of the intense sushi battle. Bel may be a sociopath, but he’s a highly functioning sociopath who often comes across as relatively friendly (albeit in a slightly creepy way). Indeed his dislikes include those who are ‘cheekier’ than he is. Often he acts as the narrator, explaining to other characters (like his teammate, Levi) what’s going on while casually insulting them for being slow. He’s also under no illusions as to his relationship with Xanxus, knowing that others such as Marmon and Squalo, understand the ‘Boss’ better than he does.
Belphegor is Sagittarius despite being born on the 22nd of December (LOL, wut?) , his favourite food is sushi, favourite drink is milk and his favorite word is ‘Prince.’ While the majority of the Reborn! cast is from Italy or Japan his country of origin is unknown.
